About Tallman Lake Senior Center

Tallman Lake Senior Center (TLSC) is one of four area senior centers located in Mason County. There is no geographic or township residency requirement that restricts participation at any of the centers, including, along with Tallman, the Ludington Area, Scottville Area, and Free Soil Area Senior Centers. These social centers are primarily for residents who are 50 years old and older, but younger guests and visitors to the area may attend events and activities if space is available and all resident seniors who want to participate can be accommodated.

TLSC is a nonprofit, tax-exempt corporation as defined by section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code. Your charitable donation will qualify for a tax deduction if you otherwise meet the requirements imposed by law. The center was first incorporated in 1979 as the “Mason County Eastern Senior Citizens Group, Inc.” By 1993 a new sign that is situated on the northeast corner of the center’s parcel was unveiled at the facility, revealing the renaming of the corporation to its present-day name.

Day-to-day operation of the center is carried out by the center director, Sandy Varnes, with some assistance from an all-volunteer board of directors and member auxiliary.

The bylaws of the corporation call for a five-member board comprising four officers and one member at large, who serve for a two-year term. The board meets once a month, on the second Wednesday, at 10:00 a.m., except in September, when the general election is held on the third Wednesday. Voting by member participants takes place during the appointed hours, and the results are tallied and announced at the board meeting held immediately after the close of the election.

All regular meetings of the board of directors of TLSC are held at the center and are open to the public. Meetings start at 10:00 a.m.

TLSC is geographically located within District No. 7 of the County of Mason. This district is represented by Commissioner Ron Bacon on the Mason County Board of Commissioners.
